Fanfic is a nice way to get your feet wet when writing, whether it's just stretching your imagination or meeting other people. It just amuses me that I did this backwards, I started original and I did fanfic when that well was dry. Partially, it was because I was considering TV writing...
I've only ever written fics for TV series, and part of applying for TV writing jobs is doing spec scripts, which are essentially "fanfic" and bringing your ideas to the story. I think that element might be why I don't think it's too controversial. I've never fic'ed an author's series, and I don't think I could fanfic an actual author's writings. Is that weird?
