I kind of had this lying around, if anyone's still interested. I'm just blocked/lazy/busy.
8: BLOOD
Jonah hated the late night shift. At this ungodly hour, most people were in bed, with or without company. Unfortunately, he was in the business of supplying said beds for either, and charging extra not to see or say anything. That was how he happened to have in his possession a copy of New World Weekly, left by a customer who was following some conspiracy theory to the next. He was going to toss it in the trash bin, but the headline ‘Monster Mash: Do Secret Government Experiments Walk Among Us?’ and the snapshot of a dog-faced man caught his attention. Did people really pay money to read this crap? The picture could have been taken at some Halloween party.
Somehow, the article made a convincing argument about the government ran several experiments with borrowed money to fun their little pet project of creating the next super soldier. There had been some progress during the Cold War era, back when they were fighting the Soviets and not the terrorists. For years after the communist threat was over, the government never stopped feeding into its pet project.
He was about to get to the part where corporations were funneling supplies to the government for kickbacks before the pulse when the front door crashed open. At that hour of the night, the echo was especially loud since even the mice had gone to bed at that point. Instinctively, his hand grabbed the 9mm tucked safely under the desk and aimed it at the source of the commotion.
“Aw, Max, look who waited up for us,” Alec said as he tumbled into the lobby, clutching his wounded arm.
Max rolled her eyes as she trailed behind him.
Jonah still didn’t lower his gun. “Nobody follow you back here?”
“Nah, it was one of those rare occasions when the person wasn’t specifically aiming for me,” Alec replied.
“Extremely rare,” mumbled Max.
The hotel manager looked back at the door again before lowering his gun, then he aimed a suspicious look at Max. “Told ya. Girls like her are only trouble.”
She shot him a dirty look.
“If you only knew the half of it,” said Alec.
“Just get upstairs. You’re bleeding everywhere,” Max commanded and steered him toward the stairs.
“If I find any new stains up there, I’m charging extra!” Jonah shouted after them.
(to be continued...)
A/N: Between The Lines will probably have 3 or 4 more chapters before it's completed, just a heads up in case anyone was wondering how much more there will be. When they'll be posted, well your guess is as good as mine at this point. Thanks for still reading, I really appreciate it!
