parallax23: (hands of time)

I was struggling with the sequel to Just Another 48 Hours, to give it an actual plot and subplots.  Then I was listening to the radio while reading the stuff on ff.net last night that I figured it out.  Green Day's Wake Me Up When September Ends came on, and I realized that I'd want to pick up in September, four months later.  It would be sufficient time to establish some of the things I want to have going on, but short enough that too many things don't seem pushed off.  Then wham!  I had the entire thing outlined before the morning was over.

BUT in writing the outline for Wake Me Up When September Ends, I ended up writing up an entire plot line in sync with my set-up that did NOT end where I needed it to, which was with Max defeating the Breeding Cult and life thereafter (I have the epilogue for the whole story almost written).  So this means there will have to be a third installment for me to finish.

As for Part 3, I won't write anything until I have Wake Me Up When September Ends done, notes not withstanding, for obvious reasons.  Ugh, I seriously didn't plan on doing a third part.  I've forgotten how stories can take on a life of their own sometimes.  Okay, all the time.  But I kind of liked the whole being super inspired thing.  Haven't done that in a while.

Meanwhile, I still have to edit Chapter 3 of Just Another 48 Hours, which will be a day late in posting.  But I'm excited to start working on Wake Me Up When September Ends as soon as I can.

When I started this, I just kind of had this minor post-Freak Nation plot of how Max and Alec finally get together that wasn't After Life (hides face in shame).  This story was based on 'Pollo Loco' and the true impact of Ben's death.  I also had wanted to write a story about the in-between time glazed over in the finale, but didn't have much substance besides that.  So that was how Just Another 48 Hours became the prequel to the other story, it didn't have any flesh to it.  For the second part, I knew what I wanted to happen but while writing it, something took over and added another layer to the story.

I actually love how Wake Me Up When September Ends closes itself off.  However that wasn't how I saw the end of the story for Max and company.  There were two very specific things that would conclude the story, neither of which can happen in Wake Me Up When September Ends because of where the characters leave off.  Actually, it's funny but the end is inspired by where Chapter 2 of Just Another 48 Hours left off really.  I kept thinking about that.  The last line was actually something post-transcription that I came up with, and I'm surprised how it overwhelmed the sequel.
