Chapter 3: Off Course
This chapter is more aboutLogan ’s role. I believe he was an important character, though I didn’t like him much as a love interest for Max and it wasn’t helped by his behavior in Season 2. I won’t bash him, but I feel like no one shows that he needs to be redeemed as badly as Max and Alec do. He was acting all kinds of messed up toward Alec when he thought Max was seeing him. I know people get to dislike their ex's new person, and I liked that they showed that Logan was human. But like normal people, they learn that they have to get over it. They don't call the cell phone of the ex's new guy looking for the ex-girlfriend and get pissed to hear that they're together in the middle of the night. Who does that?
A lot of people were upset that Max and Alec didn’t get their chance while the show was actually on, but the truth is that the pacing for their relationship was better than the way Max and Logan’s was. It’s just that things ended before anything could happen. I really liked the friction between them, which was changing towards the end of the show from that of enemies to friends. Also, could Max and Logan lie to each other anymore? Seriously, they only brought out the worst in each other from what I could see.
I ended up only posting half of the chapter that I'd written. All of this chapter is May 4. The next part isn't. First, it takes place on May 5 in the early hours of the morning. Secondly, it's a huge paradigm shift away from the section before it. Third, I hate posting really long chapters. By the way, all chapters for Just Another 48 Hours will be posted here under the date of November 1, 2008. There's no particular reason for the date, I just preferred to make it easier to find all of them if anyone did want to.
I'll admit, this wasn't my favorite chapter of the story. The latter half had redeemed it for me, but since it's been taken out this is just filler. I needed to establish a few things. Also, I realized that this part gets repeated in a later chapter, so I've cut out all the best parts and put it here and shortened that section.
I need to start writing the first chapters of Wake Me Up When September Ends while the story is still fresh too. But I'm too busy to sit and do that at the moment, so there will probably be some time between the end of Just Another 48 Hours and its sequel.
I really need to come up with a title for the "series" I've got on my hands now. And shorter versions of the titles because jeez, it's tiring to write them all out even in acronym form.
It also seems like I post here every day, but actually it's just the way I've been dating things.
Chapter 4: Stay the Night
I'm glad I decided to split this chapter up. The scene is a bit long but I liked it as much as the editor in me will allow.
I really didn't want it to be obvious that they want each other yet because I felt like that was not where their relationship left off. They were becoming friends. It was pretty clear that Josh, Max and Alec have especially bonded as a family that Logan is not a part of. Logan does mean a lot to Alec and Joshua, which is why I don't understand how or why authors bash Logan so terribly. He doesn't deserve it.
I'm doing the best I can to not bash him, though some people take as that instead of realizing character depth. He does get to be a bit petty and pissed off. However, he's not the only one. Alec's hardly noble in spite of the strange do-gooder attitude he takes at the end a little too willingly.
That was one thing that I didn't like about the show. Bad guys hardly ever stayed bad guys, and the transitions were bad. Especially since the villains were so devious. A good villain should occasionally work with the hero, but never switch sides.
This chapter was about how Max and Alec's relationship grows and their perception of these changes. They have started to depend on each other but are still cautious about it. He doesn't start sensing what she needs just yet, or try to win her heart. I wanted him to be himself, who is someone not looking for commitment. Max is still dealing with her feelings about Logan and trying to figure out where Alec fits into her life. So, here she's given him a role (remember Chapter 2?) and he sidesteps her attempt to define his role in her life.
Another thing about this story is that I can't have too much happening because it would diverge from where it needs to end. It was difficult keeping in control knowing that. Nothing can happen on the outside. A lot things go on within the sector limits, but not things that are revolutionary. I wanted to show the events that lead up to the end.
There will be more action in the next part of the series. Quite a bit if my imagination will let it.
