H is for Hero
The prompt was harder to write than I thought. I had probably been going at it for weeks and kept scrapping idea after idea. Then one day I came up with an idea for another fic during a Dark Angel marathon on SciFi Channel. Why did Max and Alec's relationship go back to square one after 'Borrowed Time'? They seemed to have some sort of understanding at the end of the episode. Then he was mysteriously missing from the 'Harbor Lights' episode. It was strange (as numerous other fics point out) -- why would Logan forego asking Alec for help since he had turned to him in far less dire situations for assistance with Max? Not just that, they knew that they could ask him for help anytime in just the episode before. Then in 'Fuggedaboutit,' Max was really pissed at Alec again. She wanted revenge for every stupid thing he did, not that he didn't deserve some of it but she was really too angry.
That was how this story came up -- what happened that led to 'Harbor Lights'? I just converted it to the prompt by putting that Logan was the "hero" for the story. There is a constant back and forth of Alec as the bad guy in Max's life. I did the normal cop-out heat non-graphic explanation for Max and Alec. But I fit it into the timeline and it flowed well. It was supposed to be an add-in. Alec being away, and Max being desperate to escape in 'Harbor Lights' made more sense to me with that. It was also angsty which was the opposite of what I wanted. I wanted to do a humor piece.
What's even funnier was that the day I posted it, someone else posted a torture Alec fic. It was pretty funny seeing so many comments going "Poor Alec!"
And a mini side rant, I am so sick of M/L shippers saying the only reason that M/A shippers wanted them together is because Max and Alec were both good-looking. Any and every argument is dismissed solely by that, as if that was the only thing. They really need to get a better argument. I really think a lot of it had to do with the fact that visually, the writers constantly had Max and Alec alone together. They constantly had conversations in private after ditching their companions, and they saw very private sides to each other that they wouldn't share with anyone else, particularly being there for the other when letting go of a former love. From a literary standpoint, a very typical lovers set-up. Also, in terms of space, Alec had been in every space Max knew -- Manticore, JamPony, Crash, her apartment, the Space Needle, on a heist, Logan's apartment, Joshua's house, Terminal City, et al. -- to which no one else could rival. Logan came close second, but he fell short because he didn't belong in many of those places. He was forcing himself in. In contrast, they showed Alec belonging wherever Max did. Anyway, I blame this rant on Theory of Drama class.
I is for Impostor
This was inspired by 2 different future stories on fanfiction.net -- 'The Children of Heroes' by Wildsky; and 'Out of the Future' and 'A Family Affair' by Vee017. Both stories were about the grown children of DA characters. If Logan and Max's 12 year age gap could work, why couldn't it work for Ray with a daughter of Max and Alec? He was 6 years old when the events took place. I'm not sure how I decided to pair up Ray and Mel (combination of Max and Alec's names) but I thought it was fun.
I had this whole story in my head for them, where Ray comes back to Seattle after years of being away from there. He goes by a different alias since he was on the run with his aunt. But he's sick of running and wants to face his past so he can move on. He knows the cult's plan failed since it was supposed to take place right after his initiation from what they said. No one knows about the existence of the breeding cult either, it never goes public that the transgenics saved the day. Ray doesn't know about his family's role in the creation of transgenics, only that his father killed his mother and wanted to kill other people. He was a little hesitant with changing away from the breeding cult as a child, but when meeting other children less fortunate than himself in his travels he realized how wrong they were.
Mel's story? Well someone pointed out that I'd need an M/A story to explain her existence. I was thinking of using 'After Life' but Max has a boy, not a girl. Though I haven't transcribed online that far. Also that story will just get two more chapters to get me out of the corner I wrote myself into, then the rest will follow. I think I'm lax because the story has been a done deal for me for a long time and have since moved on. I have a lot of other ideas I want to work with. I could use the Against Time Series to save myself grief too. But we'll wait and see since I have a long way to go with Against Time. Oh well, I'll come up with something. Like how Mel and Ray need something to do other than make eyes at each other.
This was actually one of the first one-shots I wrote for this story. It was sitting around for almost 2 months in my notebook because 'Hero' was taking so long.
I also keep using The XYZ Affair as a dumping ground for fic ideas that I don't have time to develop. Anyway, I have to update Just Another 48 Hours. I'm astounded by how long the time is between something is first written and when it's posted online. I finished that section of the story at the beginning of the month and I've still got 3 more chapters left to post. It takes a long time to type up, because as I'm doing it, I'm editing it. Also I have to take my time with editing because I've posted in a rush and ended up with tons of little errors. I'm a bit finicky and hate those kinds of mistakes and will go over them again and again.
