Progress (or Something Like It)

parallax23Since I finished Just Another 48 Hours, I decided to take inventory of how far I've come since I started posting.
After Life
I really thought I'd be done with this story by now. I'll admit the story had a rough start, considering it was my comeback to actual story-writing after a dry spell. So, I decided it was better to take it out of circulation and see how I could make it work. Currently, I have Chapter 10 done and Chapter 11 has a few more sentences left in it. I was surprised that they came to me and I finally found some momentum. Unfortunately, the story is far from being concluded. I think it has four or five more chapters before it's done. I knew it was a long story from day one, so I shouldn't be surprised. It's also shameless, unrelenting fluff.
The XYZ Affair featuring A & M
The one-shots keep coming. I'm less concerned with finishing this one because it's random inspiration. Or as I like to call it 'the plot bunny graveyard.' It's where ideas I've collected but don't want to throw away go. I'm not sure if I'll do a second set of letters (next time it'll be my own list?) once it is completed. The reason I did them was because I thought they were a great writing exercise, challenging myself to write based on the prompts. I'm not sure how I feel about 'Kiss' but 'Last' was one of the first fics I wrote for this story.
Mel and Ray from 'Impostor' will be getting their own short story. The one-shot required that the events be condensed but if I write the story, I will have to write it as I originally saw it. I had decided to use the one-shot to gauge how people would take to the story, since it would be based on two original characters and set two decades after show. It's difficult to get responses to non-shipper stories, original characters are risky, and it was better to test the water before getting involved. (I wouldn't have written Mel/Ray but used it as an original story separate from this show.) Not sure when it'll be out though, because I still have 3 WIPs as we speak.
Just Another 48 Hours
My first completed multi-chapter fic. I'm proud of it. It did even better than I could have imagined based on my other writing ventures. I hope to take things even further with the next installment, since I'm not working with as many limitations. It also upped my author status after the last chapter was posted. Now I'm nervous because I feel like the next part has to live up to this one...
Wake Me Up When September Ends
Chapters 1 and 2 are already written. (I got side-tracked by After Life's new chapters.) Then I realized that I needed to switch the two. I'm not ready to start editing and posting them though. I want to have a few more chapters under my belt so I don't have a repeat of coming up with a chapter that was out of order. I don't work well with outlines for fiction writing, so this story is just a lot of different notes from all over and one long plot sketch. I have no idea how long this story will be, except that it's probably going to be longer than After Life. I thought the prequel would be four chapters long and I ended up with eight. It also doesn't help that there's supposed to be a Part 3. As I've said before, I will deal with Part 3 when I get closer to it. I won't go further than that because I don't like stories that run on for too long, especially since I'm trying to get back into writing my own stuff.
I will be taking time to put Max and Alec together. There's a lot of things that have to happen to get them there, in spite of reviewers wanting to see them together right away. They also are not fans of Logan and don't necessarily like when I bounce to his POV. But I know why I write it the way I do. He actually has a dulled presence after something major happens.
I really do hope this story takes my writing to a new level. I feel like there are certain things that make a story really stand out - good descriptions, good plot, good insight. I want to make my descriptions more vivid and three dimensional, with imagery that jumps out and sweeps the reader off her feet. A good story pulls you in and takes you along for the ride, while a bad story makes you put the car in neutral and push it uphill. Anyway, I hope to accomplish these things with this story.
As for the actual amount of writing I've gotten done for this? It isn't flowing as quickly as I'd like. Only two chapters I'm not even wild about after this long? Not what I was aiming for. I need to get into the right head space and hop to it.
